![]() ![]() Instead of addressing candidates stand on issues, ad hominems tend to focus on personality issues, wardrobe style, speech patterns among other topics relating to popularity without a bearing on competence. These fallacies are mostly used in politics as “mudslinging”. It is the verbal attack on people without proving anything about the falsity or truth of their claims. This fallacy is more of an insult than a disagreement or proof in support of a conclusion. Someone fundamentally rejects or criticizes another individual’s view basing his argument on own characteristic, background or even physical appearance of the claimer instead of considering relevant features of the discussion. In broader terms, these are fallacies of importance. Its tenets are based on how the person making a request is perceived about background and style of living. The fallacy of appeal to a person (ad hominem) is the arguing of or about a claim that should be rejected by the personal characteristics of the person making the allegations.
